Matsuzaka dominates again as Red Sox sweep Rangers
Baseball Betting Lines
08/14/2008 -
Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Daisuke Matsuzaka threw seven shutout innings,
and Boston used a nine-run second inning to cruise to a 10-0 win over Texas,
to complete a three-game sweep of the Rangers.
Matsuzaka (14-2) surrendered six hits and five walks, while striking out five,
to pick up the win for the third consecutive start. In the first game of this
series, the Red Sox scored 10 times in the first inning and needed to battle
back for a 19-17 win.
Matsuzaka's performance made Thursday's result a little easier, as Boston got
a three-run home run from David Ortiz. Additionally, Dustin Pedroia finished
3-for-5 with two doubles and a run batted in, while Jed Lowrie went 3-for-4
with an RBI to help Boston win its fourth straight.
Tommy Hunter (0-2), making his third major league start, was touched for nine
runs on seven hits in just 1 2/3 frames. Michael Young had two of the six hits
for the Rangers, who have lost seven of eight.
Hunter set Boston down in order in the first inning, but Kevin Youkilis got
the Boston rally started in the second with a single. After a fly out, Lowrie
hit another single and Jason Varitek walked to load the bases.
Coco Crisp plated one run with a single, and then Hunter hit Alex Cora with a
pitch to force in another run. J.D. Drew then grounded into a fielder's
choice, allowing Varitek to dash home, and runners were left on the corners.
Pedroia stroked a double to left that brought in Crisp, and Ortiz followed by
blasting a three-run shot to right, also completing Boston's turn around the
batting order.
Youkilis got on base again, this time with a double, and Jason Bay singled him
in. That chased Hunter from the game, and Warner Madrigal came in. Lowrie
plated Bay by doubling before Madrigal fanned Varitek to at last end the
frame.
Matsuzaka got into a few jams of his own -- notably a bases loaded situation
with two away in the top of the second. However, he struck out Ramon Vazquez
to end that threat, and got Milton Bradley to ground into a double play in the
third to escape the inning after having runners on the corners with one out.
The Boston starter only got better from that point on, and only had one runner
reach second base for the rest of his outing. Manny Delcarmen tossed a
scoreless top of the eighth, and pinch-hitter Jeff Bailey plated Pedroia with
an infield single in the home half. Mike Timlin worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish
the shutout.
Game Notes
Each team left seven runners on base...Pedroia has 162 hits this season, which
leads the majors...Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler went 1-for-3, upping his
hit total to 161...The Red Sox continue their six-game homestand on Friday
with the opener of a three-game series with Toronto...Texas wrapped up a road

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at Sportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
